Privacy Policy
Last updated: March 4, 2026
The Rationalist ("we", "our", or "the app") is a 365-day Quran study application. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
Data We Collect
The Rationalist stores all user data locally on your device by default. If you choose to enable Cloud Sync, some data is also stored on our cloud servers. Specifically:
- Profile information (optional name, faith background, purpose) is stored on your device. If Cloud Sync is enabled, it may be included in your synced data.
- Reading progress, journal entries, reflections, streaks, and preferences are stored locally using on-device storage. If Cloud Sync is enabled, this data is also backed up to our cloud servers.
- No account creation is required to use this app. Cloud Sync is an optional feature that requires signing in with Google or Apple.
Cloud Sync & Authentication
The app offers an optional Cloud Sync feature that lets you back up your progress and sync across devices. To use Cloud Sync, you must sign in with your Google or Apple account. When you enable Cloud Sync:
- Authentication data: We receive your email address and a unique user identifier from Google or Apple when you sign in. This is used solely to identify your account and is not shared with third parties.
- Synced data: Your reading progress, quiz history, XP, journal entries, starred passages, daily activity, and app settings are encrypted in transit (TLS) and stored on our cloud database hosted by Supabase.
- Automatic syncing: Once signed in, changes are automatically synced to the cloud in the background. You can sign out at any time to stop syncing.
- Data retention: Your cloud data is retained as long as your account exists. You may delete all cloud data at any time (see Your Rights below).
- Subscription data: Your subscription tier (Plus/Pro) is managed by RevenueCat and is not overwritten by cloud sync. Cloud sync only backs up local app settings, not payment or billing information.
Subscription Data
If you purchase a subscription (Plus or Pro), the transaction is processed by Apple through the App Store or Google through the Play Store. We use RevenueCat, a third-party service, to manage subscription status. RevenueCat receives an anonymous app user ID to track your entitlements. RevenueCat's privacy policy is available at revenuecat.com/privacy.
Rumi AI
The app includes Rumi AI, an optional AI-powered scholarly companion available to Pro subscribers. When you use Rumi AI:
- Your messages and conversation history are sent to our server (hosted on Cloudflare Workers), which forwards them to Anthropic's Claude API to generate responses.
- We do not store your conversations on our servers. Messages are processed in real-time and not retained after the response is delivered.
- Anthropic may process your messages in accordance with their privacy policy. Anthropic's API usage policy states that API inputs are not used to train their models.
- No personal identifiers (name, device ID, etc.) are sent with your Rumi AI messages.
Audio Narration
The app may download pre-generated audio files from our content delivery network (hosted on Cloudflare) for narration features. If pre-generated audio is not available, the app uses your device's built-in text-to-speech engine. No personal data is transmitted during audio playback.
Analytics and Tracking
We do not use advertising SDKs or third-party tracking tools. RevenueCat assigns an anonymous device identifier solely to manage your subscription status. Your reading progress and app interaction data (streaks, quiz results, XP) are stored locally on your device. If you enable Cloud Sync, this data is also transmitted to our cloud servers for backup purposes only.
Notifications
If you enable daily reminders, notifications are scheduled locally on your device. No notification data is sent to external servers.
Third-Party Services

- RevenueCat — manages subscription entitlements using an anonymous ID.
- Cloudflare Workers — hosts the Rumi AI proxy server and audio content delivery. No user data is stored.
- Anthropic (Claude API) — processes Rumi AI conversations. Messages are not stored or used for model training.
- Supabase — hosts the Cloud Sync database and authentication service. Your synced data is stored securely on Supabase's infrastructure. Supabase's privacy policy is available at supabase.com/privacy.
- Google Sign-In — provides authentication for Cloud Sync. Google receives standard OAuth data during sign-in. Google's privacy policy is available at policies.google.com/privacy.
- Apple Sign-In — provides authentication for Cloud Sync on iOS. Apple may provide a private relay email address to protect your real email. Apple's privacy policy is available at apple.com/privacy.
